New Delhi: India’s hopes in weightlifting were dashed as Mirabai Chanu missed out on medal contention after finishing fourth in the 49 kg weightlifting category. After a good show in the snatch round, Chanu could not maintain her performance in her last clean and jerk attempt of 114kg, finishing with 199 kg total. The Indian weightlifter had secured a silver medal at Tokyo Games.
China’s Hou Zhihui defended her title successfully with an effort of 206kg (89kg+117kg) while Romanian Mihaela Cambei took home the silver with total of 205kg
Earlier in the clean and jerk round, Mirabai failed to surpass the 111kg mark in the women’s 49kg in her first attempt but in second attempt, achieved the mark. Meanwhile, Rosina Randafiarison of Madagascar lifted 95kg in her first attempt while Dominica’s Beatriz Piron lifted 102kg in her first attempt of clean and jerk taking the pole position with a total of 187kg.
Later, Taiwan’s Fang Wan-ling took the top spot as she has lifted 102kg in her first attempt of clean and jerk with a total of 188kg lift to her credit. Romania’s Mihaela Cambei claimed the top spot with a total weight of 199kgs after she lifted 106kg in her first attempt of clean and jerk. Hou Zhihui has lifted 110kg in her first attempt of clean and jerk.
Chanu begins snatch with 85 kg lift
Earlier in the snatch event, Mirabai Chanu began with a 85-kg lift and succeeded in it. The Indian weightlifter’s second attempt was set at 86kg but she went 2 kgs above the normal and tried to lift 88kg but failed to do so. In her third and final attempt, she aimed at lifting 88kg and successfully completed it moving to the top spot.
But Romania’s Mihaela Cambei grabbed the top spot with a miraculous lift of 93kg in her final attempt. China’s Hou Zhihui took the second spot with a lift of 89 kg in her second attempt while Chanu ended the snatch round at the third spot with her best lift of 88 kg.
