New Delhi: Indian Railways operates one of the largest rail networks in the world. The train is the most popular public transport in the country, connecting even the remotest part of India. Over the years, Indian Railways has taken several steps to improve the rail network. Now, the Railways is moving towards a cleaner and greener future and is going to launch the hydrogen trains to achieve this goal. The Integral Coach Factory in Chennai is developing the hydrogen trains.

Hydrogen train in India

The hydrogen fuel train set will push Indian Railways towards green energy and zero carbon emission. In fiscal year 2023-24, the Ministry of Railways allocated Rs 2800 crore for the development of 35 hydrogen trains. The first hydrogen train is being developed on a pilot basis and the Research Design & Standards Organization is preparing its specifications.

Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw has said that it will be the longest hydrogen train in the world. Also, it will be most powerful hydrogen train. He also said that concomitant on-ground infrastructure to refill hydrogen is envisioned with an integrated facility for production-storage-dispensation of hydrogen.

About the hydrogen train developed in India

The engine of India’s hydrogen train will have the highest capacity among its kind in the world. While the capacity of hydrogen trains of most countries range from 500 to 600 horsepower, India has created an engine whose capacity is 1,200 horsepower.

The first hydrogen train of India is expected to be launched by the end of March 31, 2025. As per U Subba Rao, General Manager (GM), ICF, the hydrogen train set is likely to be turned out by March 25. The first hydrogen train will run on Northern Railway’s Jind-Sonipat section whose length is 89 km.

Meanwhile, the Delhi-Katra Vande Bharat Express serves only vegetarian food and is the first of its kind in India. Launched on October 3, 2019, it has become a popular mode of travel between Delhi and Jammu. It is the first Indian train to feature a menu with only vegetarian options.

Indian Railways is spearheading a green revolution with the development of a 1200-horsepower hydrogen train, the most powerful of its kind globally. Developed by the Integral Coach Factory (ICF), this train, expected to launch by March 2025, will run on the Jind-Sonipat section.  Biz News Business News – Personal Finance News, Share Market News, BSE/NSE News, Stock Exchange News Today
