New Delhi: The curtains are down on the Paris Paralympics 2024 as India recorded a historic outing in the French capital, bettering their previous tally of Tokyo Paralympics with 10 more medals. India clinched a stunning haul of 29 medals, claiming seven golds for the first time at the event, nine silver medals, and 13 bronze. This was the 17th edition of the Paralympics and the 13th for India. This was also only the seventh edition where India bagged medals.
India’s tally at the Games was opened by star shooter Avani Lekhara who successfully defended her gold. India saw many medal winners who repeated their triumphs from the Tokyo outing. The likes of Lekhara, Sumit Antil, and Manish Narwal were all repeated winners among the 11 such players. The tally came to a close with first-time medal winner Navdeep Singh, who clinched a historic bronze in the javelin throw (category).
However, similar to Navdeep, India shone on the grand stage on the back of first-time Indian medallists. More than half of the 29 medals were bagged by newcomers who were either representing India at the Paralympics for the first time or got the opportunity to bag medals this year.
Out of the 29 medal wins, two were claimed by sprinter Preethi Pal, and a medal was achieved in the mixed-team compound archery by the pair of Rakesh Kumar and Sheetal Devi which takes the count to 29 Indian medallists in total. As many as 18 Indians turned out to be first-time medal winners for the nation. Here’s a list of all the para-athletes who bagged their first medal at the Paralympics this year.
