India’s Nithya Sre Sivan wins maiden Paralympics medal, bags bronze in badminton SH6 category

New Delhi: India’s Nithya Sre Sivan made the country proud by bagging her maiden medal at the Paris Paralympics 2024 on Monday. The para-shuttler defeated Rina Marlina of Indonesia 21-14, 21-6 in straight games to bag the bronze medal in the women’s singles SH6 category. It was India’s 5th medal in para-badminton in Paris, helping them go past the tally of 4 badminton medals from the last edition of the Games in Tokyo.

Competing in the ‘SH’ category which stands for “standing short or short stature”, Nithya dominated the proceedings against her Indonesian opponent in the bronze medal match. The Indian defeated Marlina inside just 23 minutes to grab the top spot on the podium after having missed out on a chance to do so in the mixed doubles category where she faced a defeat in the bronze medal match earlier in the day.

Nithya started the bronze medal match against Marlina in dominant fashion as she raced to a 7-0 lead in the first game. However, the Indonesia fought back to make it 10-10. Just when it looked like the game could end up going anywhere, the Indian para-shuttler brought her A-game to the fore as she won the first game 21-14 inside 13 minutes to get into the lead.

She was on top of her game once again at the start of the second game as the Indian shuttler amassed a huge lead of 10-2 against the Indonesian. There was little fightback from Marlina this time around as Nithya managed to close the game 21-6 in just 10 minutes. It was a memorable straight games win for the Indian para-shuttler, who stood on the podium for the first time at the Paralympics.

Stellar day for Indian para-shuttlers
