IOA set to ban Antim Panghal for three years due to indiscipline at Paris Olympics

New Delhi: The Indian Olympic Association is likely to ban wrestler Antim Panghal for three years for indiscipline during Paris Olympics.

Her sister was caught by the International Olympic Committee for security breach due to impersonation at Games Village.

Panghal handed her accreditation card to her sister to facilitate her entry into the Games Village and was nabbed by IOA security personnel.

“The decision will be formally announced after she reaches India,” an Indian contingent source told PTI.

The 19-year-old was beaten in her opening bout in the women’s 53kg category on Wednesday. After her defeat in the round of 16 clash, she didn’t return to her room at the Games Village.

Panghal checked into the hotel in Paris with her coach Bhagat Singh and sparring partner Vikas.

The she told her sister to go to the Games Village and return with her belongings, handing the accreditation card. Her sister was nabbed and was taken to a police station to record her statement.

Panghal’s accreditation was cancelled by the IOC, leaving a red-faced IOA to make arrangements to send her along with her support staff back to India.

Adding to the IOA’s embarassment was reports of Panghal’s support staff misbehaving with cab driver, refusing to pay fare and travelling in an”inebriated state”.

But Vikas vehemently denied his involvement in any such incident, when PTI contacted him.
