Fiorentina ready to take massive step amidst Manchester United’s shock interest in re-signing David De Gea

New Delhi: Following rumours of a potential return to Manchester United, Fiorentina is expected to activate custodian David De Gea’s one-year contract extension option, according to a report. In order to invest out on Andre Onana, who signed from Inter in a move for up to £47 million, and to reunite with his former Ajax manager, Erik ten Hag, United released De Gea on a free transfer in the summer of 2023. De Gea joined Fiorentina this summer after taking a year off from football in hopes of a low-key career comeback, and he has relished the opportunity.

With ten clean sheets in 28 Serie A games, he has contributed to his team’s defence remaining among the best in the league. But it’s not just the numbers that have impressed the fans and the management. The Spaniard, who was once considered as one of the best goalkeepers in the world, seemed to have regained the cat-like reflexes and shot-stopping abilities from his brilliant early days at United.

Fiorentina’s view on this situation

However, neither Ten Hag nor current head coach Ruben Amorim have been able to instill faith in Onana, and according to recent sources, United are eager to own up to their error and bring De Gea back to the team this summer. Fiorentina have the option to extend De Gea’s current contract by an additional 12 months, which would double the 34-year-old’s income when it expires at the end of the current campaign. They have stated that they will be doing so soon, according to MARCA.

Although Onana hasn’t been that bad for the Red Devils, it seems like he has certainly grown much more error-prone from his time at Inter. As for United, they should have known, as the Cameroon internantional did show these signs back when he was playing for the Nerazzuri. Meanwhile, De Gea is becoming one of the main reasons behind Fiorentina’s success as they are now competing for the European spot.

De Gea’s influence on and off the pitch has astounded Fiorentina, and they have no intention of losing the Manchester United custodian this summer.

“The intention is to keep players like De Gea and [Nicolo] Fagioli but I don’t want to say more,” president Rocco Commisso admitted recently.

“We’ll see if they also want to stay, so we can start next year with an even stronger team.”

Will DDG be the solution to United’s problems?

Manchester United are far from their best. One thing that can be said is that their never-ending problems are just not helping their current cause that sees them sitting 13th. However, they did manage to get a point against their struggling rivals Manchester City in their recent derby, where Amorim’s side also kept a clean sheet. Clearly, the Red Devils are having the worst season in their recent times and they need a proper enforcement in their squad.

This transfer may not be a priority right now but De Gea’s situation needs to be studied. He has been in a great form ever since he joined the La Viola and this potential return to Old Trafford can be a big boost for the Red Devils. The Spaniard knows the club well and can be a great fit in that lineup. He knows the overall system and how the management works but in order to get his signature, United need to offer him a good amont of money which can be a problem considering the recent issues that the club has faced due to the idea os cost-cutting by Sir Ratcliffe.

Manchester United have reportedly shown interests in reuniting with their former star goalkeeper David De Gea after his brilliant performances at Fiorentina. However, LA Viola have responded to United’s interests.  Football Sports News: Latest Cricket News, Cricket Live Score, Sports Breaking News from Sports Today
