New Delhi: Gujarat Titans (GT)’s hopes of securing a top-two finish in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 were dealt a huge blow as they suffered a crushing 83-run defeat against Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in their final league match of the season at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on Sunday, May 25. GT suffered their biggest defeat in terms of runs in the IPL as their net run rate took a huge hit after their loss to CSK.
However, despite the defeat, the Gujarat Titans are sitting at the top of the IPL 2025 points table as the race for the top two spots heats up with the league stage heading for conclusion. Shubman Gill & Co. are currently at the top of the table with 18 points after 14 matches and a net run rate of +0.254. However, they are not guaranteed a top-two finish after their defeat against CSK.
The race for the top two is open as all four teams who have qualified for the playoffs are in contention to bag the top two spots and book their spots in Qualifier 1. The teams that finish in the top two will get two shots at making it to the final. The winner of Qualifier 1 will directly qualify for the final, while the loser will take on the winner of the Eliminator in the 2nd Qualifier to get a second chance to make it to the summit clash.
IPL top two scenario explained for all qualified teams:
1) Gujarat Titans – 18 points
Gujarat Titans are currently at the top of the IPL 2025 points table with 18 points after 14 matches. However, they might not finish in the top two after back-to-back defeats in their last two matches. GT will finish in the top two if RCB lose against Lucknow Super Giants in their last game of the season.
However, if RCB beat LSG, they will overtake GT with 19 points after 14 matches. Punjab Kings will pip GT if they beat Mumbai Indians in their last game. Mumbai Indians can also overtake GT if they beat Punjab Kings, courtesy of a better net run rate. If the PBKS vs MI clash ends in a no-result, GT will be in the top two, and RCB will join them if they beat LSG, or PBKS, if LSG beat RCB.
2) Royal Challengers Bengaluru – 17 points, 1 match remaining vs LSG
RCB have their fate in their own hands. The Rajat Patidar-led side needs to beat Lucknow Super Giants in their last game to ensure a top-two finish in IPL 2025. If RCB beat LSG, they will move to 19 points and might finish on top of the point table. However, if they lose, RCB would be out of the race for the top two as GT will remain above them and the winner of the MI vs PBKS clash will take the other spot.
3) Punjab Kings – 17 points, 1 match remaining vs MI
Punjab Kings too have their fate in their own hands. Shreyas Iyer & Co. are currently second on the points table with 17 points after 13 matches and need to beat Mumbai Indians to finish in the top two. PBKS can also make it top two if their match against MI ends in a no result and RCB loses to LSG in their last game.
4) Mumbai Indians – 16 points, 1 match remaining vs PBKS
Mumbai Indians can secure a spot in the top two and book a place in the Qualifier 1 if they manage to beat Punjab Kings in their last league match. MI will move to 18 points with the win and their superior net run rate will help them pip GT in the top two. MI will not make it to the top two if they lose to Punjab Kings or the match ends in a no result.
Gujarat Titans suffered a crushing 83-run defeat against Chennai Super Kings to end their IPL 2025 campaign with a loss. However, they remain at the top of the table as the race for the top two spots heats up. IPL Sports News: Latest Cricket News, Cricket Live Score, Sports Breaking News from Sports Today
