Tehran: Iran is all set to carry out the “harsh punishment” order by Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei against Israel over the assassination of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh in Iran, an Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps official said.
“The supreme leader’s orders regarding the harsh punishment of Israel and revenge for the blood of martyr Ismail Haniyeh are clear and explicit … and they will be implemented in the best possible way,” Aljazeera reported quoting Ali Fadavi, deputy commander of the IRGC.
Following the killing of senior Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh while he was in Iran attending the swearing in ceremony of the newly elected President Masoud Pezeshkian, Supreme Leader Khamenei promised “harsh punishment” for Israel in retaliation.
In a statement issued earlier, the Supreme Leader said, “The criminal and terrorist Zionist regime martyred our dear guest in our house and made us bereaved,” adding that it “also prepared the ground for a harsh punishment for itself.”
The leader further while offering condolences asserted that it was their duty to avenge Haniyeh’s killing that happened in the country.
“We consider it our duty to avenge his blood in this bitter and difficult incident that happened in the territory of the Islamic Republic.”
The leader also declared three days of public mourning across the country.
Although the strike on Haniyehb has been widely assumed to have been carried out by Israel, however, Benjamin Netanyahu‘s government did not claim responsibility and said it won’t comment on the killing.
Meanwhile, during his televised statement, Netanyahu also made no mention but said Israel had delivered crushing blows to Iran’s proxies, Hezbollah and would respond forcefully to any attack.
“We are prepared for any scenario and we will stand united and determined against any threat. Israel will exact a heavy price for any aggression against us from any arena.”
In Turkey, thousands of Palestinian demonstrators marched through the streets of central Istanbul late on Wednesday to protest Haniyeh’s killing.
