Is heart health far more intricate during pregnancy? Cardiologist answers

New Delhi: Pregnancy brings about many changes in a woman’s body, especially to the cardiovascular system. For women with heart conditions or those who develop heart problems during pregnancy, understanding the risks and managing them effectively is crucial. Fortunately, most women can enjoy a healthy pregnancy and childbirth with the right care. As pregnancy progresses, the body adapts to support the growing baby. The heart works harder, increasing blood volume, heart rate, and cardiac output. While these changes are normal, they can create challenges for women with existing heart conditions or for those who experience new heart issues during pregnancy.

In an interaction with News9Live, Dr. Aditi Singhvi, Clinical Lead for Adult Heart Failure and Transplant, Narayana Health City, Bommasandra, Bengaluru, she explained this.

Managing Pre-Existing Heart Conditions

For women with congenital heart defects (defects present since birth), like an atrial or ventricular septal defect, pregnancy may cause their symptoms to worsen due to the added pressure on the heart. Similarly, women with valvular heart diseases such as mitral valve stenosis or aortic valve regurgitation face elevated risks of complications. Doctors may recommend treating these conditions before pregnancy in more severe cases to reduce potential dangers.

Heart Conditions Arising During Pregnancy

Heart-related problems can also develop for the first time during pregnancy. Conditions like gestational hypertension or preeclampsia can arise, even in previously healthy women. Preeclampsia, which is characterized by high blood pressure and potential damage to the organs, can worsen into eclampsia if left unchecked. However, with regular prenatal care and monitoring, these conditions can be managed to protect both the mother and baby.

Cardiomyopathy, a condition that affects the heart muscle, can be especially tricky to handle during pregnancy. One serious form, known as peripartum cardiomyopathy, can occur in the last stages of pregnancy or soon after delivery. Although it is uncommon, it requires immediate medical intervention to prevent serious complications. Fortunately, many women who experience this condition recover fully with prompt treatment.

Collaborative Care for Optimal Health

Successfully managing heart conditions during pregnancy requires a collaborative approach between the obstetrician, cardiologist and the patient. With early detection, and a personalized care plan, women with heart conditions can have a safe pregnancy and delivery.

Conclusion

A heart condition during pregnancy doesn’t mean the journey has to be difficult. Medical advancements now offer more options than ever, making it possible for women with heart conditions to have healthy pregnancies. Working closely with healthcare providers and taking preventative measures ensures that this special journey of pregnancy is smooth for both the mother and the baby.
