New Delhi: Star Indian shuttler PV Sindhu has spoken about her ambitions to play for the next Olympics edition in Los Angeles. She also said that the failure to account for a medal at the Paris Olympics didn’t bring the end of the world to her decorated badminton career.
Former World No.2 Sindhu is the most accomplished Olympian in the history of Indian badminton, having won medals in back-to-back Olympics – silver in Rio and bronze in Tokyo. However, the Hyderabad-based shuttler couldn’t continue her prolific run at this year’s Summer Games in the French capital.
Sindhu bowed out from the pre-quarterfinals in the women’s singles event after losing to China’s He Bing Jiao, who eventually claimed silver medal in the concerned discipline. Speaking on her mission to play the next quadrennial event, the 2019 World Champion said it will depend on her injuries and fitnes.
“If I’m fit, if I’m able to do it, if I’m injury free, then definitely yes I will compete at LA. That’s what I can tell you,” Sindhu told news agency PTI.
Sindhu opened up about her failure at the Paris Games, where she was playing under the mentorship of legendary shuttler Prakash Padukone.
“It does happen at times. I had amazing two Olympics and in the third one, I couldn’t get a medal. But I think I played well. I learn from my mistakes and come back stronger. It’s not just over with it. I am looking one year at a time and now the next Olympics is again four years down the line,” the 29-year-old said.
“It’s not the end of the world. I can see myself going there (on court) for at least the next couple of years now. I don’t hate it or anything, it’s fine, I need to come out of it. I don’t have any regrets, it’s not just over for me. I definitely would want to play a lot more and why not?” she added.
Which is PV Sindhu’s next badminton event?
Sindhu has played in a couple of BWF tournaments after her Paris show. She last made it to the quarterfinals of the Denmark Open before losing to Indonesian shuttler Gregoria Mariska Tunjung. She will next participate at the Japan Masters (November 12-17).
“I’m in good shape, physically and mentally I’m fit. We’ve been working on different aspects, on speed and defence. It’s always good to learn new things from different coaches, which will help in your game,” she said.
“So it’s going on really well and I hope, you know, this time in Japan and China, I hope I do well with their guidance. So, just that you’ll have to just wait for the magic to start,” she added.
