‘It’s not realistic’: Mauricio Pochettino rules out Tottenham Hotspur managerial return

New Delhi: United States manager Mauricio Pochettino has denied rumours linking him with a return to Tottenham Hotspur, following Ange Postecoglou’s dismissal from the Premier League club. He managed the club for five years, starting from 2014.

He led the club to the Champions League final but failed to secure a trophy with the North London club. Pochettino signed a two-year contract in September to lead the USA at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which they are co-hosting with Canada and Mexico; despite this, his name has appeared as one of the favourites for the Spurs job.

When asked about the rumours in the post-match press conference after the USA’s 2-1 defeat to Turkey, he denied the rumours. Tottenham Hotspur sacked Postecoglou just 16 days after the club’s Europa League victory, ending their 17-year trophy drought. He led Tottenham to a 1-0 win against Manchester United in Bilbao, securing the club’s first European trophy in 41 years.

The North London club has also booked a spot in the next season’s Champions League. But after a poor Premier League campaign in which the club finished 17th, Spurs confirmed Postecoglou’s sacking.

‘If something happens, you’ll see’: Mauricio Pochettino

The USA head coach stated that since he left Spurs in 2019, his name has been included on the list whenever a managerial position becomes vacant at the club.

“If something happens, you’ll see, but we can’t discuss this now because it’s not realistic. Look at where I am and where we are,” he said.

The USA has now lost three consecutive matches in a row, after facing defeats against Panama and Canada in March’s CONCACAF Nations League, but Pochettino remained positive about his team’s performance.

“I want to continue this attitude into the future until we reach the World Cup … that’s the only way we can improve,” he added.
