New Delhi: Legendary MS Dhoni, who retired from international cricket in 2020, continues to feature in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 for Chennai Super Kings (CSK). No one seems to be aware of his retirement plans. Amidst all the speculations, star India pacer Mohammed Shami recently revealed Dhoni’s retirement strategy which indeed is a hilarious take on “when should a player retire.”
MS Dhoni’s career is a thing of beauty in itself with recent achievements being the IPL 2023 title winning. He kept wickets in the IPL 2024 and played the role of a finisher with the bat. He notably handed the CSK captaincy to Ruturaj Gaikwad ahead of the 2024 season. Rumours continue to run rife over Dhoni’s availability for the next IPL season considering his knee surgery last year and the calf injury, despite which he played the entire IPL 2024.
He recently celebrated his 43rd birthday, and his fitness remains a talking point which puts his retirement a bit closer. But the former India skipper hasn’t revealed anything about his future plans nor have his close associates. Shami, who has been out of the Indian team for a while now dealing with an injury, recently revealed Dhoni’s hilarious answer to when should a player call it quits from cricket.
MSD all about “Dekha jayega”
“You (media) guys have been putting a question mark on his future the man himself says, “Dekha Jayega” (let’s see). I had this conversation with Mahi bhai, asking “When should a player retire?”. He said, “First when you get bored, and second, Jab lage ki laat padne wali hai (when you realize that you would be kicked out of the team),” Shami revealed on Shubhankar Mishra’s podcast.
“But the first and foremost thing is that when you stop enjoying the game, it’s a sign that your time has come. Better you choose the best moment to retire. Because your body starts intimating you if you can’t sustain a particular format. That’s when a player should call it time,” he added.
Shami continues to rehab from his ankle surgery which he underwent after the ODI World Cup 2023. He has been missing from Team India since then and might make a return either against Bangladesh or New Zealand in the upcoming home series. However, it all depends on how quickly he recovers from the aftermath of the surgery and receives the medical clearance from the BCCI as well.
Mohammed Shami recently opened up on MS Dhoni’s funny retirement strategy which turns out to be the probable reason why the 43-year-old is delaying calling time on his career. Cricket Sports News: Latest Cricket News, Cricket Live Score, Sports Breaking News from Sports Today
