New Delhi: Japanese Sumo wrestler Terunofuji Haruo announced his retirement at the age of 33 on January 17, Friday. Terunofuji was the lone ‘Yokozuna’ which means the grandmaster in Sumo. He is also the last active Yokozuna in the sport.

The injuries pushed the Japanese to decide at a young age as he was just 33 and announced his retirement. The prestigious award in Sumo wrestling has been achieved by only 73 wrestlers in the sporting history, which shows the greatness of Terunofuji in the Sumo sport.

The Japanese wrestler lost his last bout in his career against No. 2 ranked Maegashira Tobizaru. Terunofuji also lost the opening bout in the ongoing Grand Sumo tournament and after his loss, he stated he would be retiring if he lost one more bout in the tournament.

Terunofuji also withdrew from the ongoing New Year Grand Sumo Tournament in Tokyo and now all eyes will be on Hoshoryu, who impressed everyone with his skills in the previous tournaments.

Terunofuji served as the lone grandmaster in Sumo for more than three years. Hoshoryu will be eyeing to improve his promotion and capture the Yokozuna rank.

If he fails to do so, then it will be the first time since 1993 that the Sumo wrestling sport will left with no Yokozuna in the sport’s history. After the departure of Terunofuji, now the young wrestlers will be aiming to embark new era in the sport.

Terunofuji Haruo’s achievements

The Sumo sensation won his first tournament in 2016 when he was just 24 years old. He became the 73rd Yokozuna in sporting history which is the greatest achievement in Sumo. He is the first wrestler in the Reiwa Era who was promoted to the Yokozuna as he delivered many memorable performances in the last two years. Japanese wrestler held the Yokozuna’s achievement for consecutive three years.
