Jay Shah becomes ICC chairman: Indians who have headed world cricket’s governing body

New Delhi: Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) secretary Jay Shah on Tuesday was confirmed as the new chairman of the International Cricket Council (ICC) after being elected unopposed. Shah was the sole nominee for the top post after Greg Barclay, the current ICC chairman decided against seeking a third term in the office.

Shah became the youngest to hold the prestigious post at the age of 35 and the fifth Indian to head the world cricket’s governing body. Shah will assume his role as the new chairman of the ICC from December 01 this year. He will step down from his post as BCCI secretary and the president of the Asian Cricket Council (ACC) to take over the reins from Barclay.

Shah was the frontrunner to succeed Barclay as the new chairman after the New Zealander confirmed that he wouldn’t seek a third term. The BCCI secretary enjoyed overwhelming support from the majority of the 16 ICC directors and was thus elected unopposed. Australia and England, who are part of the BIg 3 alongside India in world cricket, also reportedly supported Shah for the chairmanship.
