New Delhi: Two-time Asian Games gold medallist and Olympian Tajinderpal Singh Toor clinched the elusive gold medal in men’s shot put at the National Games 2025 with a fine display in the final. Athletics action continued at the National Games on Sunday with athletes from across the country showcasing their talent and skills in multiple events.
Toor, who was favourite for gold, lived up to his reputation as he secured the top spot on the podium with a throe of 19.74m in the men’s shot put final. Toor, a two-time gold medallist in the Asian Championships, represented India in the men’s shot put at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. Toor also qualified for the Asian Athletics Championships with his 19.74m throw in the final on Monday.
Samardeep Singh Gill, who won gold at the Khelo India University Games in 2023, bagged the silver medal with a throw of 19.38m. Prabhkirpal Singh finished 3rd to take the bronze medal with a throw of 19.04m in the men’s shot put final. Along with Toor, Gill too managed to surpass the qualification mark for the Asian Athletics Championships to book his spot in the event.
Dev Meena smashes national record in men’s pole vault
Dev Meena etched his name in Indian athletics history by smashing the national record in men’s pole vault at the National Games 2025 on Sunday. Meena cleared the 5.32m mark in the final to win the gold medal and break the previous record held by Siva Subramani, who cleared 5.31m in 2022.

However, despite smashing the national record, Meena, who hails from a small village Shilfoda Kheda in the Dewas district of Madhya Pradesh, failed to qualify for the Asian Athletics Championships. Meena will thus not be part of the Indian contingent at the continental event later this year.
Meanwhile, Sumit Kumar of the Services bagged gold medal in the men’s 3000m steeplechase with a timing of 8:46.26 seconds. His fellow Services teammate Rohit Verma won the silver medal while Shankar Lal Swami of Himachal Pradesh won the bronze medal. In the Women’s 3000m steeplechase, Uttarakhand’s Ankita bagged the gold medal in front of her home crowd.
