New Delhi: The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) has banned its players from participating in the Pakistan Super League and other T20 leagues during the domestic season, as per the Telegraph report. The bold move has a major impact on the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) while England players are still allowed to participate in the Indian Premier League (IPL).
It has been reported that 74 players from England participated in the different T20 tournaments worldwide in 2023. But the ECB is now determined to change this trend to promote participation in domestic cricket events within England. With this decision, the England board aims to safeguard the quality of domestic tournaments like the County Championship, Vitality Blast and the Hundred.
The new policy also prevents players from participating in two tournaments. For instance, the players could participate in another tournament after their teams were eliminated from the first. The franchise leagues are the major source of income for the cricketers and the move has placed them in a tough situation.
The T20 Blast and the Hundred will compete with T20 leagues like the USA’s Major League Cricket (MLC), Canada’s Global T20 League (GLT20), and Sri Lanka Premier League. Another late tournament in August is the Caribbean Premier League (CPL). ECB chief executive Richard Gould has said that the new policy will enable the board to strike the right balance between supporting players.
“This policy gives clarity to players and professional counties around our approach to issuing No Objection Certificates. It will enable us to strike the right balance between supporting players who want to take up opportunities to earn and gain experience, while also protecting the integrity of cricket globally” ECB chief executive Richard Gould said on the policy as quoted by the Telegraph.
