Jay Shah received backing of 15 out of 16 members to become ICC chairman, here’s what PCB did

New Delhi: Jay Shah became the youngest-ever chairman of the International Cricket Council (ICC) after the BCCI secretary was elected unopposed for the top post on Tuesday, August 28. Shah was the sole nominee for the prestigious chair after New Zealand’s Greg Barclay confirmed he won’t seek a third term after his current tenure ends on November 20.

Shah will take charge as the new ICC chairman on December 01 this year and will become only the 5th Indian to head the world cricket’s governing body. While he was elected unopposed, a report in News18 has claimed that Shah received the support of 15 out of 16 ICC directors while filing his nomination for the chairman’s post.

Did the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) support Shah’s nomination for the top post? As per the report in News18, PCB was a mute spectator during the entire process and neither expressed their support nor denied it. Shah was elected unopposed with powerhouses like England and Australia supporting his candidature for the top post.

“There wasn’t any word from PCB. Not that it was required because Shah had overwhelming support from the members. But the Pakistan board preferred to play the role of a spectator during the entire process,” a source was quoted as saying by News18.

Shah needed at least 9 of the total 16 ICC directors to be in his favour to be elected unopposed and he received an overwhelming majority. The BCCI secretary was always the frontrunner for the prestigious position once it was confirmed that Barclay would not seek a third term. Shah said he wants to take cricket to greater heights and make it more popular than ever across the globe.
