Jay Shah set to become ICC chairman? All eyes on BCCI secretary after Greg Barclay opts out

New Delhi: All eyes are on Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) secretary Jay Shah after current International Cricket Council (ICC) chairman Greg Barclay, on Tuesday, opted out of the third term following the end of his tenure on November 30. This decision taken by Barclay has fuelled speculations on Shah, who currently serves as the secretary of BCCI, to take over the apex cricketing body’s top role.

Will Shah throw his hat in the ring?

According to a report on PTI,  the last date for filing the nominations for the chairman’s post is Augusts 27 and only time will tell whether Shah throws his hat in the ring or not. An ICC chairman is eligible for three terms of two years each and Barclay, has completed two terms, remaining four years in office.

“ICC Chair Greg Barclay confirmed to the Board that he will not stand for a third term and will step down from the post when his current tenure finishes at the end of November. Barclay was appointed as the Independent ICC Chair in November 2020, before being re-elected in 2022,” the ICC stated in a media release.

As per the rules of ICC, the chairman’s election comprises of 16 votes and a simple majority of nine votes is required for the winner. Earlier, to become the chairman, the incumbent needed to have two-third majority. The BCCI secretary, who is considered as one most of the most influential faces in the board room, has a chance of taking over the top role from Barclay. Shah currently heads ICC’s all-powerful Finance and Commercial Affairs (F&CA) sub-committee.

Currently, Shah has another one year left as the BCCI secretary before going on a mandatory cooling off period of three years from October, 2025. As per the BCCI constitution approved by the Supreme Court, an office bearer can stay for six before he needs to go for a cooling off of three years. In all, a person can stay in office for a cumulative period of 18 years, nine in state association and nine in BCCI.
