New Delhi: 24-time Grand Slam champion Novak Djokovic revealed his retirement plans ahead of the Australian Open 2025. Djokovic will face wildcard Nishesh Basavareddy in the first round of the 2025 Australian Open on Sunday, January 12.

Djokovic’s long-time rival Andy Murray has joined his team as a coach ahead of the tournament. The Australian Open has been Djokovic’s most successful Grand Slam, and he will look to extend his record to 11 trophies. He has achieved so much success in his long career which is unmatched by any active player.

As he continues his brilliant career, the retirement of his opponents has created a big shift in tennis. Federer announced his retirement in 2022, Andy Murray retired last summer while Rafael Nadal ended his career just two months ago. Despite this, the Serbian tennis star has no immediate plans to retire, though his father has urged him to think about retirement.

‘I think about more how than when’: Djokovic on his retirement plans

The Serbian tennis legend has said that his father has been trying to retire him for a while now but he’s not thinking about it at the moment. His father’s concerns arise from the physical toll the sport takes on Djokovic’s body.

“I am thinking about how I want to end it and when I want to end it. No, actually, I take that back. I think more about the ‘how’ than the ‘when’” said Djokovic.

He further added that if he starts to lose more and feel more challenge in overcoming big obstacles in Grand Slams then he’ll announce his retirement. To prolong his illustrious career, he has already adjusted his schedule. He is playing fewer tournaments and focusing only on the major Grand slams. While many believe that he should end his career on a high note, Djokovic is still determined to continue as long as he feels physically and mentally capable.
