Jay Shah to take over as ICC chairman with support from England, Australia – Report

New Delhi: Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) secretary Jay Shah is reportedly set to replace incumbent Greg Barclay as the chairman of the International Cricket Council (ICC). Barclay has already confirmed he will not seek a third term after his current tenure ends on November 30. The New Zealander converted his decision to the ICC’s board of directors on Tuesday.

As per a report in Australia’s The Age, Shah will take over the top post after Barclay’s exit. Shah informed Barclay that he is interested in taking over the top post and has the numbers in his favour to do so. The BCCI secretary was always a strong contender for the ICC chairman’s post considering the immense power BCCI holds in ICC.

As per the report, Shah has support from the cricketing boards of the likes of Australia and England, two major powerhouses in the ICC among other countries to take over as the new chairman of the world body for the next three years. Barclay was eligible for another two years in the top role. However, Shah’s interest meant he had to give in.

Jay Shah’s journey in cricket administration

Shah, who is the son of BJP leader and India’s Home Minister Amit Shah, began his journey in cricket administration in 2009 when he was appointed as an executive board member of the Central Board of Cricket, Ahmedabad in 2009. He later took over as the joint secretary of the Gujarat Cricket Association (GCA) in 2013.

He stepped down as GCA’s joint secretary in 2019 and took over as the secretary of the BCCI. He was re-elected as BCCI’s secretary in 2022.

Jay Shah set to become youngest ICC chairman

At 35, Shah will become the youngest chairman in ICC’s history if he is elected to the top post. August 27 is the last date for all candidates to put forth their nominations for the ICC chairman post. In case of more than one candidate, an election will be held to elect the next chairman.

As per ICC’s rules, a simple majority of nine votes (51%) is required out of 16 for a candidate to win the chairman’s elections. Shah, who enjoys goodwill among many member nations of the ICC is likely to be elected unopposed. He will become the 5th Indian after Jagmohan Dalmiya, Sharad Pawar, N Srinivasan and Shashank Manohar to become the ICC president.
