New Delhi: PM Narendra Modi on Thursday explained how the game of Kabaddi links the relationship between India and Poland. He also wished the Poland national kabaddi for its international competitions.
Kabaddi is considered to be a traditional sport founded in India during the ancient period with a rich history of more than 4000 years. According to Olympics.com, holy texts hint at kabaddi being played by Hindu God Krishna during his childhood and the sport also finds its mention in the epic, Mahabharata.
Although kabaddi is not part of the Olympics Games as of now, the popularity of the indigenous sport has reached across Asia and some parts of Europe as well. Poland is one of the European nations to show keen interest in Kabaddi in the last few years.
While addressing the Indian diaspora in Warsaw, Poland, on Wednesday, PM Narendra Modi lauded the connection of kabaddi between India and Poland.
“We are connected through the game of Kabaddi as well. This game reached Poland through India and they took it to great heights. Poland is going to host the Kabaddi championship for the first time. I want to wish good luck to their team,” he said.
India as a powerhouse in Kabaddi
India has lived up to the expectations of the inventor behind the sport of kabaddi with its utter dominance at the international stage. Both the Indian men’s and women’s kabaddi teams have won most titles in the Kabaddi World Cup standard style (India men: 3 titles and India women: 1 title). In the circle style of the Kabaddi World Cup, India men has clinched six titles and India women has three titles to emerge the most successful side in their respective categories.
India has won the most gold medals at the Asian Games, bagging eight golds out of nine editions from 1990 to 2022 in the men’s competition. The Indian women team has also accounted the most gold medals (3) in the continental showpiece event.
The popularity of the sport has given the birth to Pro Kabaddi League (PKL), a franchise-based tournament which has now expanded to 12 teams.
