New Delhi: According to a study, working on mental health and eating cheese can go a long way in helping people live longer and age better. Happier, satisfied people are less likely to suffer from long-term illnesses. Additionally, it is said that unhappy people spent a lot of time smoking, eating unhealthy junk food and watching too much television as opposed to eating fresh fruits and cheese, which speeds up cognitive decline. For this, researchers at Shanghai Jiao Tong University in China said that there is a close link between psychological stress and physical ailments.
How does better mental health improve quality of ageing?
The study’s authors said that the results underscore the importance of mental health and wellbeing in ageing, healthy adults. For this, researchers used data from 2.3 million across Europe. For this, results were compared on positive outlook, depressive symptoms, neuroticism and life satisfaction with health problems associated with ageing. What is worse is that mental health is associated with higher risk of illnesses and habits shortening people’s lives like breast cancer, not working out and heart diseases.
Researchers wrote about the same in the journal Nature Human Behaviour and stated that there was a strong link between mental and physical health. It was also found that mental health is associated with higher resilience and self-rated healthspan and health. Mental health has been a key factor responsible for the biological process speeding up and resulting in health-related problems in a long run. Experts further unearthed the protective effects of mental health on healthy ageing, irrespective of occupation, income and education.
Researchers further say that there are 33 other factors that associate physical ageing and mental health. This includes diet, smoking, fitness, cholesterol levels, blood pressure and medicine use which is way worse in unhappy people and it also ages them faster. Furthermore, to stay fit and active, it is advised to eat cheese and more fruits as it slowed down the proces sof ageing.
Anxiety and depression are common health problems and doctors say that older people have worse mental health because of loneliness. Results of the study further showed that it is imperative to prioritise mental health for healthy ageing. Basic interventions like healthy lifestyle such as improving mental health, restricting television time, smoking and preventing common health problems.
