Malappuram: In a freakish and shocking accident raising concerns on safety aspects during train journeys, a 62-year-old died after the berth of the train in which he was travelling came off the hook and slammed hard over his body.
The accident was reported inside the Millennium superfast express (Train no: 12645 Ernakulam to Nizamuddin) on June 15th while the train was passing by the Warangal railway station in Telangana.
The deceased is identified as Ali Khan, aged 62 hailing from Ponnani in Malappuram.
He was immediately taken to a hospital in Warangal in Telangana with grievous injuries with three fractures on his neck and was later paralyzed following the accident. He had undergone three emergency surgeries since then. However, the efforts of the doctors went in vain as Ali Khan breathed his last on Monday evening.
Ali Khan had boarded the Hazrat Nizamuddin express on the night of June 15th along with his friend Muhammed to travel to Jalandhar in Punjab.
“Muhammed wanted Ali khan to accompany him on the journey and they had planned to visit Delhi and nearby places before proceeding to Jalandhar. The incident happened on June 16th when Ali khan was on the lower berth. Muhammed told us that the upper berth fell on Ali Khan as the train was passing through Telangana. The Co passengers informed the TTE after which he was provided medical treatment at a local hospital in Warangal station. The next day he was shifted to another hospital in Hyderabad where he had undergone three surgeries” said Backer, the elder brother of Ali Khan.
The Railway Police have registered a case following the incident.
Railway gives a clarification
The Southern Railway in its official press release regretted the unfortunate passing away of the passenger Ali Khan while travelling in the Millennium Express on June 15th.
The Southern railways in its press release said, “There have been news reports in media circles incorrectly alleging that the middle berth which opened up/unfolded was in damaged condition. It is clarified that the middle berth unfolded due to improper chaining of middle berth with the Upper berth by the respective passenger. It may be noted that the middle berth did not fall down/crash due to improper maintenance by Railways: thus, reports suggesting a maintenance failure are misleading. A thorough scrutiny of the reported middle berth seat was conducted at Nizamuddin and it was found to be in good condition. Indian Railways expresses its heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family and is committed to provide best possible service to its esteemed passengers.
Ali Khan was allotted the seat No.57 of the S6 coach.
