New Delhi: Midfielder Kevin de Bruyne, who is nearing the end of his contract with Manchester City, shone during his side’s Premier League clash against Wolverhampton Wanderers at the Etihad Stadium in Manchester on Friday. It was the skipper’s penultimate home game as he helped the team edge past Wolves 1-0, and lift them to the third spot in the Premier League standings.

He received an assist from Jeremy Doku, who, with a low cross, successfully plotted the side’s first score with captain De Bruyne. City are now four points clear of Nottingham Forest, sitting sixth, in the race to qualify for next season’s Champions League. Notably, Wolves proved to be a menace for the home side before the goal, rattling them and causing them problems.

They had their share of chances and really should have done better when they finally broke through, but midlfielder Jean-Ricner Bellegarde opted to square the ball rather than trying to net it, and the chance went in vain as a sliding Marshall Munetsi was unable to connect with it. The visiting side was only inches away from breaking the deadlock when left wing-back Rayan Ait-Nouri hit the far post only before getting his follow-up cleared off by City’s Josko Gvardiol.

Wolves did attempt to hit back in the second half but struck the woodwork again as Matheus Cunha made a whipped effort and ultimately put an end to their six-game winning streak. They sit 13th in the table rankings, having lost their 18th game of the season and boasting just 12 wins.
