Pyongyang: North Korea’s Kim Jong Un has reportedly lined up and executed as many as 30 government officials for failing to prevent floods in the country’s Chagang Province, which led to some 1,000 deaths and prompted thousands to homeless, as per media reports.
This comes after South Korea-based Chosun TV citing North Korean officials said that Kim ordered a ‘strict punishment’ for the ones responsible for the ‘unacceptable’ loss. The report claimed that some 20-30 officials were executed because of this.
“It has been determined that 20 to 30 cadres in the flood-stricken area were executed at the same time late last month,’ the South Korean outlet quoted the official as saying.
This comes as the North Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) reported that the country leader had instructed the authorities in an emergency meeting to “strictly punish” those who had neglected their responsibilities in disaster prevention and caused “even the casualty that can not be allowed.”
As per several foreign media outlets, Kim also opened an investigation into the actions of Chagang Province Party secretary Kang Bong-hoon., who accompanied accompanied Kinm to flood inspection sites.
In the disastrous floods that hit North Korea, over a thousand people died in heavy rains. Additionally, over 4,000 houses and some 7,410 acres of agricultural land were also flooded, leading to massive distress among people.
Videos and images of several roads, buildings, structures and railways also sustained severe damage in the northwestern city of Sinuiju and the neighbouring town of Uiju.
