New Delhi: The Indian team rang in the new year with celebrations in Sydney ahead of the all-important fifth Test against Australia at the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG) starting Friday, January 03. In pictures that surfaced on social media, Indian players were spotted celebrating together in Sydney. KL Rahul too celebrated the new year in style with his wife Athiya Shetty.
In a video that went viral on social media, Team India star Virat Kohli was spotted celebrating the new year with his wife Anushka Sharma and teammates Devdutt Padikkal and Prasidh Krishna among others. Rahul also shared a glimpse of his new year celebration. He shared pictures of the dazzling fireworks at the Sydney Harbour Bridge and a picture of a couple enjoying their dinner.
Rahul has had a decent series with the bat against Australia but would have liked to contribute a lot more as the visitors find themselves trailing 1-2 heading into the fifth and final Test in Sydney. India suffered a crushing 184-run defeat in the recently concluded 4th Test in Melbourne and will be looking to bounce back to winning ways.
India are in a must-win situation in Sydney as only a win will keep them in contention to qualify for the final of the World Test Championship (WTC) 2023-25. If India draw or lose, they will be out of contention and will miss out on a chance to make it to their third consecutive WTC final. India will also lose the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25 if they lose the 5th Test in Sydney.
KL Rahul’s numbers in BGT 2024-25
Rahul has been in decent touch in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25 with 259 runs from four Test matches so far. He was asked to open in the absence of skipper Rohit Sharma in the first Test in Perth and did well with a brilliant knock of 77 runs in India’s second innings to help them register a dominant 295-run win.
Rahul continued to open in the next two Tests despite Rohit’s return, thanks to his good form and repaid the faith shown by the team management with 132 runs in the two games, including a gritty 84-run knock in the first innings of the 3rd Test at the Gabba in Brisbane. However, despite his fine form at the top, Rahul was demoted to no.3 in the 4th Test in Melbourne with Rohit returning to the top.
