New Delhi: Simran Shaikh was picked by the Gujarat Giants for a whopping price of Rs 1.90 Cr in the WPL Auction on Sunday, December 2024. The middle-order batter played nine matches in the WPL for the UP Warriorz.
Hailing from Dharavi, one of the world’s biggest slums, she started playing cricket at a very early age. Simran used to play matches with the boys in her area as the girls didn’t play the sport.
At the age of 15, she found herself obsessed with cricket but had no idea about the growth and popularity of women’s cricket. She joined the Crossway-based United Club, where under the guidance of ‘Romdeo sir’ Simran learned the basics of the game.
She also mentioned the name of Sanjay Satam, who provided her with a cricket kit and other essentials when she required it. She comes from a poor family; her father is a wireman and her mother is a housewife. She has three sisters and three brothers.
She failed her 10th-grade exam and dropped out of school. Her parents initially didn’t believe that she would be able to reach such a level. She gained a lot of experience playing in the local cricket tournaments in Mumbai and has played under-19 cricket. Later, she was selected for Mumbai’s senior team and played along with Jemimah Rodrigues.

She amassed a sensational 79 runs in the U-19 tri-series final against South Africa for India B. She also got selected in India’s squad for the inaugural U-19 Asia Cup in Malaysia.
