New Delhi: The role of experienced campaigners comes into play when your caught in a tough situation but for the star-studded Indian team, the case seems to be otherwise. The failure of biggies like Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma in both the innings of the day/night Test match against Australia at the Adelaide Oval certainly points towards Team India’s dark and bleak future.
Kohli (7) and Rohit’s (3) immature knocks in the first innings were sort of digested to a certain extent as KL Rahul, Shubman Gill and Nitish Kumar Reddy filled in their voids with little contributions to take India to a three-digit score but another flop show in the second innings on Saturday took a further hit at the team’s condition and questions their skillsets.
After Australia took a 157-run lead in the first innings, it should have become imperative for both the seasoned campaigners to take control of the proceedings but the ‘legends’ yet again failed to show up.
Kohli, Rohit’s short stay
The art of being patient and playing the game with a proper assessment of the situation and format seems to be a thing of the past, especially for these two biggies. While Kohli faced 21 balls and could muster only 11 runs in it, Rohit seemed to be low on confidence as he just managed 6 runs after facing 15 deliveries. Had Mitchell Starc no bowled a no ball, the Indian skipper would have been dismissed even even earlier but he luckily managed to survive. A while later, Pat Cummins bowled a magnificent delivery as Rohit was left completely clueless on how to tackle it.
After India lost the wickets of KL Rahul and Yashasvi Jaiswal, the onus lied on Virat Kohli to show some patience and hang on the crease for a while but he could just stand for 21 balls, Hopes were even higher from the star Indian batter after he ended a drought with a sensational century in Perth but he once again had to bow down before his weakness of succumbing to a delivery pitched outside off stump. From here on, it will be tough for India to stage a comeback in the Test match but with Pant and Reddy still on the crease, sensible and mature knocks from the duo is a possibility which cannot be ruled out.
