New Delhi: Kylian Mbappe’s legal battle against Paris Saint-Germain over €55 million in unpaid wages continues today before the Court of Appeals of the French Professional Football League (LFP). The ongoing dispute focuses on unpaid salaries and bonuses that the French superstar claims he is owed for the final months of his contract with the Parisian club.
The tensions between Mbappe and PSG escalated earlier this year when the club reportedly failed to pay the striker for April, May, and June along with withholding an “ethical bonus” promised for these months. A significant portion of the unpaid amount also includes the final third of a signing bonus which amounts to €36 million, originally scheduled for payment in February 2024. Following the disagreement Mbappe’s legal team issued an official complaint to PSG in mid-June, seeking payment for the owed sums.
The conflict first reached the LFP’s legal committee in September, when the league attempted to mediate between the two parties. The 25-year-old, however, declined the mediation offer. His lawyers instead pointed to Article 259 of France’s professional football charter which mandates that player wages must be paid by the end of each month in accordance with ordinary employment law.
According to reports, PSG has consistently denied that they owe Mbappe €55 million. The club argues that a verbal agreement, allegedly made last summer waived these financial obligations. PSG insists that Mbappe’s public references to the pact and a paper trail supported by multiple witnesses back up their position. Despite the LFP’s legal commission ruling that PSG must pay Mbappe within eight days, the decision was non-binding leaving the case unresolved. The National Joint Appeal Committee is expected to deliver a similar ruling this today with a possible recommendation for mediation.

Despite the French Football Federation (FFF) being alerted about the situation and UEFA also getting involved there has been little progress. The dispute is now expected to end up at French National Olympic and Sports Committee (CNOSF) Administrative Court or an employment tribunal (conseil de prud’hommes) indicating that this legal process could take several years to resolve.
Mbappe’s departure from PSG and the strained relationship
For Mbappe, this dispute comes on the heels of his high-profile departure from PSG after seven successful years where he became the club’s all-time top scorer. Despite his on-field achievements the relationship between the French international and PSG ended on a sour note. Reports of a verbal altercation between Mbappe and PSG president Nasser Al-Khelaifi have added further tension to an already fraught situation.
As both parties prepare to appear before the National Joint Appeal Committee, the legal battle appears far from over with PSG seemingly willing to let the courts take their time rather than settling the €55 million claim. Whether mediation is revisited or the matter moves further into the French legal system this case may set a precedent in football’s contractual disputes.
