New Delhi: The speculation regarding Luka Modric’s club future has finally been put to an end after weeks of uncertainty as Real Madrid’s number 10 has signed a year-long extension with the club, which sees his deal run until the end of the 2024-25 season.
The 38-year-old midfielder has been one of Real Madrid’s best midfielders and has enjoyed a very successful 12-year stay at the club. Joining from Tottenham Hotspurs in the summer of 2012 for a £30million fee, Modric was infamously written off after his first season in Madrid, being voted as the worst signing of the summer by readers of the Spanish Daily Marca.
His incredible career with the Spanish giants has yielded a total of 26 trophies including six UEFA Champions Leagues, six FIFA Club World Cups and four La Liga titles for the Croatian. Despite being 38, Modric was a crucial member of the squad that won the league and Champions League double last season, making 46 appearances all season and contributing to 10 goals from midfield.

While becoming more of an impact player in the recent seasons given his age, the Croatian was a huge part of Carlo Ancelotti’s La Decima winning squad and was also integral to Zinedine Zidane’s famous ‘three-peat’ of the UEFA Champions League in 2016, 2017, and 2018.
Modric’s best moment while with Real Madrid came in 2018 where, after guiding his club to another UEFA Champions League title and leading his country to the 2018 FIFA World Cup final, he was awarded the Ballon d’Or for his efforts, while also winning FIFA’s The Best Player award for the year. He has been a hugely important player for club and country ever since moving to Madrid and has undoubtedly become one of the legends of the game.
The Real Madrid midfielder also added another honour to his glorious career at the recently concluded UEFA Euro 2024 in Germany. Leading his nation at yet another International tournament, the midfielder scored in his side’s 1-1 draw with Italy which made him the oldest player to score in UEFA Euro history. While he couldn’t guide his team out of a tough group, he certainly managed to take something from the tournament.
Turning 39 in September, it is widely expected to be Luka Modric’s last season of club football before announcing his retirement. Having already made 534 appearances with Los Blancos, scoring 39 goals and assisting another 86, it’s expected his iconic number 10 jersey will be inherited by new Real Madrid signing Kylian Mbappe, who will certainly have big boots to fill once the Croatian retires.
