New Delhi: Lautaro Martinez turned out to be the saviour for Argentina as he didn’t let his captain Lionel Messi’s tears go to waste, powering his team to a 1-0 victory in the final to lift the Copa America 2024 title. Argentina extended their incredible dominance in the tournament by clinching a record 16th Copa America trophy.
Martinez, the leading goal-scorer of the tournament, stepped up for Argentina in the extra time to help them seal the trophy with a sensational strike. He scored the winner in the 112th minute after midfielder Leandro Paredes won the ball and passed it to Giovani Lo Celso, who laid it off for Martinez to complete an emphatic strike.
Martinez was one-on-one with Colombia goalkeeper Camilo Vargas and made no mistake with his finish as put it right over him to slot it into the back of the net. The goal rocked the stands at the Hard Rock Stadium in Miami as thousands of Argentinian fans were sent into jubilation. The goal was enough to seal the game as Argentina successfully defended their title with a 1-0 win.
