New Delhi: Seven-time champion Lewis Hamilton crashed his Ferrari during the team’s pre-season testing programme in Spain on Wednesday. Hamilton crashed the team’s 2023 car at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya after losing control but was ultimately declared unhurt. Ferrari, however, declined to comment on the incident.
The incident took place on Hamilton’s second day of running at the Spanish track, where he is sharing the car with teammate Charles Leclerc. Ferrari are testing their 2023 car this week with new signing Hamilton and Leclerc. Ferrari are committed towards involving the British racing driver in the team as quickly as possibly before the start of the new season.
New season to begin with Australian GP
The new formula one season begins with the Australian Grand Prix from March 14 to 16 and team Ferrari would be keen to embed Hamilton in the team at the earliest. Ferrari chose to refrain from commenting on the incident but in whatever little information they provided, the team termed it as nothing abnormal. Hamilton is on the course of learning the tit bits and characteristics of the unfamiliar car after his 12-year career with Mercedes.
Another reason which is being stated behind the crash is the significant restrictions imposed on testing in Formula One. Team Ferrari are running a limited programme in the 2023 car, where only Hamilton is allowed to drive. The current testing restrictions imposed by F1 suggest that the race drivers can compete a maximum of 1000 kilometres running.
Hamilton completed 30 laps at the team’s Fiorano test track last week before he and Leclerc moved on to this week’s three days of running at Barcelona. The team is set to launch their 2025 cat at Fiorano on February 19 and they are expected to give the Brit further testing before the launch of their new vehicle.
