New Delhi: Argentina star Lionel Messi has cemented his legacy even further by surpassing Dani Alves to become the footballer with the most trophies in history. This momentous achievement added another feather to his illustrious by winning the Copa America second time. Argentina defeated Colombia 1-0 in the final on Monday morning. The victory elevated Messi to another crown.  

Previously, the crown for most trophies belonged to the decorated Brazilian defender Dani Alves, who has amassed an incredible 44 titles across his illustrious career. Alves who is known for his attacking flair and trophy-collecting stints has been a relentless winner.

However, Messi’s insatiable hunger for silverware has seen him inch closer and finally surpass Alves. The young boy from Rosario becomes the most decorated player in football history. With a staggering 45 trophies in his cabinet, Messi boasts a testament to his unmatched consistency and dominance over the years.

Once criticised for his lack of silverware Messi has etched four major titles to his name within three years.- one World Cup, two Copa Americas, and a Finalissima from 2021 to 2024. Messi has accumulated 1,212 goals and assists in 1,068 games (838 goals and 374 assists). 

Out of 45 titles, 39 have been achieved at the club level (maximum at Barcelona). The list of trophies held by him are listed below.

Messi’s journey in the Copa America 2024 was a testament as he suffered a hamstring injury in the group stage. He even got substituted in the 64th minute in the final against Colombia due to a nasty ankle injury and was seen crying on the bench. Messi’s presence and leadership were felt throughout the match but Argentina pushed the match in the extra time. 

In the 112th minute, Lautaro Martinez scored for Argentina and ensured Messi could celebrate with the team and adore Argentina fans in the stands. Lionel Messi continues to etch his name in the annals of football history with his sheer determination and passion for the game.
