New Delhi: Liverpool have submitted an eye-watering offer of £109m (€130m) to sign German playmaker Florian Wirtz from Bayer Leverkusen. According to a report in The Athletic, the massive offer is said to be an improved second bid from the Premier League 2024-25 champions.
The proposed bid is said to be the maximum Liverpool will offer and includes a guaranteed fee and potential add-ons.
The 22-year-old German youngster has emerged as a primary target for the Reds and Wirtz’s eagerness to move to Anfield has also helped the talks to progress.
The talks between the two parties for the signing of Wirtz began last week after Liverpool agreed a deal to sign Jeremie Frimpong from Leverkusen. The former Arsenal right-back is set for a medical at Anfield.
Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich were also interested in signing Wirtz, but the player’s heart was set on a move to England. It was also reported that Wirtz had already visited England to look for a house to live.
Wirtz’s contract with Leverkusen runs till 2027. He last signed a deal with the German club in 2022.
If the proposed deal goes through, Wirtz will become the most expensive signing of all time by Liverpool by a long way, surpassing the £85m the Reds paid to Benfica for Darwin Nunez in 2022.
Why does Liverpool want to sign Wirtz?
Wirtz was instrumental to Leverkusen’s historic 2023-24 title-winning campaign. His contribution of 18 goals and 20 assists was crucial for Leverkusen’s maiden Bundesliga title. Unsurprisingly, he was named the Bundesliga’s Player of the Season.
Though Bayer failed to replicate their performances in the 2024-25 campaign, Wirtz still finished with 16 goals and 15 assists.
Wirtz’s flexibility of playing anywhere in the attacking line is a big reason why Liverpool have gone all guns blazing in the transfer market for the progressive midfielder. He possesses great potency near the final third and is a player who makes things happen.
Boasting good pace and technical ability, Wirtz is a great ball-carrier, capable of beating defences on his own. At the same time, he is an ideal player to link up with courtesy of his close control and delicate touches.
