New Delhi: Liverpool have completed the signing of Dutch international Jeremie Frimpong from Bayer Leverkusen in a deal worth €35 million. The 24-year-old has signed a five-year contract at Anfield, arriving just hours after the club confirmed Trent Alexander-Arnold’s departure to Real Madrid.
Frimpong’s arrival is widely seen as a direct response to Alexander-Arnold’s exit with the new signing expected to step into the right-back role under new manager Arne Slot. Jeremie is well known for his pace, energy and attacking output and fits well in the mould of a modern full-back and is likely to be a key part of Slot’s plans heading into the 2025-26 season.
“I’m going to give my all, my energy, my work-rate and hopefully we can win together, we celebrate together, get everything together.”

Successful spell in Germany
The Dutchman leaves Leverkusen after a highly successful four-and-a-half years with the Bundesliga side. During his time in Germany, Frimpong played 190 games, scoring 30 goals and contributing 44 assists. He played a crucial role in helping Leverkusen to their historic 2023-24 campaign which saw them win both the Bundesliga and the DFB-Pokal while going 51 matches unbeaten before losing in the Europa League final.
Frimpong was named in the Bundesliga Team of the Season for two consecutive years and was a standout performer for Xabi Alonso’s side, offering both defensive reliability and attacking threat down the right flank.
From Manchester to Merseyside
Frimpong’s football journey began at Manchester City’s academy, where he developed before moving to Celtic in 2019. He impressed in Scotland, winning three trophies in just over a year, which earned him a move to Leverkusen in January 2021.

Now, the 24-year-old is set to return to England with a wealth of experience as he joins a Liverpool squad already featuring a strong Dutch presence including Virgil van Dijk, Cody Gakpo, and Ryan Gravenberch.
Strong competition at right-back
While Frimpong is expected to start, he will still have to earn a spot in the Slots’ squad as the competition for the position is high. Northern Ireland international Conor Bradley, who recently signed a new four-year contract with the club after a breakthrough season, is also in the race.
Slot is believed to value Frimpong’s dynamism and ability to push forward something the new boss sees as vital in his tactical setup. The manager’s positive view of the player helped speed up the deal which was finalised at Liverpool’s AXA Training Centre following a successful medical test.
