Lok Sabha Poll debacle: Edappadi K Palaniswami faces heat; VK Sasikala and O Pannerselvam call for united AIADMK

Chennai: In the wake of AIADMK’s crushing defeat in the Lok Sabha elections under the leadership Edappadi K Palaniswami (EPS), ousted AIADMK leaders VK Sasikala and O Pannerselvam have called for an united AIADMK.

“I have been patient all this time with the sole thought that the movement nurtured by Amma should never fail because my selfless role in its development is included. I made great efforts to unify the party. I can no longer watch the movement’s destruction because of the personal preferences and hatreds of a few,” Sasikala, close aide of former AIADMK supremo J Jayalalitha said in a statment on Thursday.

Expressing angiush over AIADMK’s worst defeat in the Lok Sabha polls, Sasikala further said “the loss of deposits in 7 seats is a huge pain that the party has never seen before. Is this why the two great leaders worked tirelessly for the progress of this party till their last breath. This is a huge betrayal to them. We could not bear the repeated defeats anymore.”

In similar lines, O Pannerselvam said “Let’s use the magic words of the late former Chief Minister MGR as a medicine: “All the gold that came from our mother’s path if we stop at one path and follow the right path, tomorrow will be ours. Let us be ready to make any sacrifice to restore the party that late former Chief Minister Jayalalithaa had placed at the top and the regime she handed over to us.”

Edappadi Palaniswami, who has assumed the leadership of the AIADMK, is being criticized for the series of defeats in the local body elections, the assembly elections in 2021, the municipal elections for vacant seats, the Erode by-elections, and the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.

AIADMK deputy general secretary KP Munusamy counters the call for a united AIADMK from VK Sasikala and former CM O Panneerselvam. Munusamy said “they are trying to create confusion among the AIADMK cadres. 24 hours have passed after Sasikala’s call; everyone knows how many AIADMK functionaries visited her residence. OPS has no locus standi to speak about the AIADMK since he aligned with Annamalai who spoke ill about late leader J Jayalalithaa.”
Munusamy further said “the AIADMK has increased its vote share by 2% in this election than the 2019 Lok Sabha elections while the DMK has lost 6% vote share than the 2019 Lok Sabha elections.”

Similarly, Former AIADMK Minister SP Velumani said “Until L Murugan and Tamilisai Soundararajan led the BJP’s state unit, there was no problem; only after Annamalai became State president of the BJP, the problem started since he criticized AIADMK leaders; Annamalai was responsible for breaking alliance between AIADMK and BJP; had the alliance been intact, it would have won 35 seats in the Lok Sabha elections”
