New Delhi: Luka Modric is set to leave Real Madrid after conclusion of the Club World Cup and will appear in his final game for the Spanish giants at their Santiago Bernabeu home ground this weekend.

“Although, after the Club World Cup, I will no longer wear this shirt on the pitch, I will always be a Madridista,” Modric said in a statement on Thursday.

The Croatian midfielder joined Madrid in 2012 and has been a key player in a trophy-filled stint for Los Blancos.

In 13 seasons, he has helped the team win 28 titles: six Champions Leagues, six Club World Cups, five European Super Cups, four La Liga titles, two Copa del Rey titles, and five Spanish Super Cups.

Modric has played 590 matches for Madrid, scoring 43 goals and also won one Ballon d’Or and one Silver Ball at the Club World Cup, the latest edition of whoch will be held oon June 18 in the United States.

Modrix is one of only five players in the history of football to have won six Champions Leagues, and is the player with the most titles in Real Madrid’s 123-year history.

“Real Madrid CF and our captain Luka Modrić have agreed to end an unforgettable period as a player for our club at the end of the Club World Cup, which our team will play in the United States starting June 18.

“Real Madrid wants to express its gratitude and deep affection for someone who is already one of the greatest legends of our club and of world football,” the club said in a statement.

The 39-year-old won the Ballon d’Or, the Best FIFA Men’s Player Award, and was named UEFA Men’s Player of the Year in 2018. He has been named in the FIFPro FIFA World XI six times and has been named best midfielder in the Champions League twice.

For the Croatian national team, he has played in 186 matches and holds the all-time record for international caps, winning the Golden Ball at the 2018 World Cup in Russia and the Bronze Ball at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

“The Santiago Bernabéu will pay tribute to him this Saturday on the occasion of our team’s final league (La Liga) match,” the club said.
