Malayali family killed following a fire accident in Kuwait shortly after return

Kuwait : Weeks after the death of 49 labourers at an apartment in Kuwait, four members of a family from Pathanamthitta in Kerala died in a fire that broke out at their residence in Kuwait. The incident took place on Friday night at Abbassia in Kuwait. The victims have been identified as Mathew Muzhakkal, his wife Lini Abraham and their children Isaac and Erin. The family left for Kuwait after their vacation on Thursday night.

The horrific incident took place just four hours after the family reached their residence in Kuwait. As per sources, the family had reached at their apartment at 4pm and as per reliable reports the fire broke out at their apartment in the second floor at 8pm. The family suffocated to death following the fire outbreak. As per sources, a short circuit which originated from the Air Conditioner is believed to be the cause of the fire outbreak.

Mathew worked at Reuters and his wife Lini was a staff nurse at Adan hospital in Al Ahmadi Governorate. The two children were studying at the Bhavans school in Kuwait.

On Thursday, the Kuwaiti Fire Force (KFF) had urged citizens and residents to follow safety guidelines to prevent fires. The warning came after temperatures crossed 50 degree Celsius in the country. During the briefing, KFF Director Brig Mohammad Al-Ghareeb emphasised the importance of possessing and knowing how to use fire prevention equipment, such as fire blankets, smoke and gas detectors, and fire extinguishers. The Director highlighted that electrical faults due to overloaded circuits as a major cause of fires and advised shutting off unnecessary devices to prevent them.

Last month 45 Indians had died when a massive fire broke out at an apartment that accommodate labourers in Kuwait’s Mangaf.

“Mathew has been working in Kuwait for the past 15 years. His wife is a nurse and his children is studying over there”, said a relative of Mathew to the media.

The victims family in Kerala is yet to be informed on the timing of the arrival of the bodies from Kuwait.
