New Delhi: Renowned badminton coach Arun Vishnu has decided to leave the national setup of badminton and start his own academy in Nagpur. He resigned from his post of national doubles coach in December after the World Tour Finals concluded in Hangzhou, China.
Having known to be the man behind the rise of young women’s doubles pair of Treesa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand, Arun has worked with many popular coaches. He was associated with chief national coach Pullela Gopichand after he won the mixed doubles title with Aparna Balan in 2016.
The former national player, who hails from Kozhikode in Kerala, has decided to set up his own badminton academy in Nagpur in March. He will join his wife Arundhati Pantawane, who has played badminton at the international level. The decision comes to be with his aging father-in-law.
“I have resigned from the post in December after the World Tour Finals. I have been with the national setup for eight and a half years as a coach, and I have made some great memories. Now, I am moving to Nagpur and starting an academy there in March,” Arun told news agency PTI.
Arun also played a role in pairing up the junior-senior duo of Tanisha Crasto and Ashwini Ponnappa as it represented the nation at the Paris Olympics. Arun’s last assignment as a national coach was the BWF World Tour Finals in December 2024, where Gayatri and Treesa played.
“I worked with juniors for the first four years and spent the last four years focusing on women’s doubles,” Arun explained.
“There have been many great achievements and memories during this time. It was incredibly satisfying to see the girls win the BAC gold and to watch Gayatri and Treesa reach World No. 9.”
“I truly believe they have the potential to break into the top five. I’m also proud to have helped Ashwini and Tanisha qualify for the Olympics when no one expected it,” he added.
Arun was also part of the supporting squad for the Indian team winning silver medal at the Commonwealth Games and the Asian Games in 2018 and 2022. The women’s team won the Badminton Asia Championship last year as it was a historic feat for the country.
