Manchester United: Old Trafford hit by mice infestation after roof leak incident

New Delhi: Manchester United have been plagued by a mouse infestation at Old Trafford. Droppings were detected during a recent sanitary inspection, and the club received a two-star rating, much short of the maximum five. Club officials are collaborating with pest control partners and the local authorities to adopt a number of initiatives aimed at addressing the problem.

Inspectors discovered evidence of mouse activity in a ground-floor corporate apartment and a booth selling food to fans on the concourse. They then reduced United’s food hygiene rating from four to two stars and ordered that adjustments be implemented. The problem is related to the iconic stadium’s placement between a canal and a railway line.

In 2015, Mail Sport disclosed that the club was working with pest control contractors to address rat issues in the North and South stands. Some had even been sighted in the staff offices. Colder temperatures in winter frequently worsen the problem, causing bugs to move to warmer and more sheltered regions.

Given that around 74,000 people attend each home game, the club must to deal with a significant volume of debris. Pest controllers are now thought to visit Old Trafford four to five times per week. Insiders said the team wants to raise their rating to five ‘as soon as feasible’. Neither of the two discoveries occurred in a food preparation area.

Water leaking from the roof was captured on video during Ruben Amorim’s press conference following Sunday’s 3-0 home defeat to Bournemouth. United, along with new co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe and INEOS, are currently considering whether to build a new stadium or restore Old Trafford.

The vast majority of Premier League clubs have a five-star hygiene rating. United had their rating reduced to one star after participants to a business private function were served undercooked chicken. They later saw it upgraded to four stars at the time of the inspection in November.

A Manchester United spokesperson had this to say: ‘Manchester United implements a robust pest-control system throughout Old Trafford.

‘Multiple weekly checks are made in all catering areas and stringent measures are taken to ensure levels of hygiene and cleanliness are high wherever food is stored, prepared and served.

‘If incidences of this nature do occur at the stadium, immediate and appropriate action is taken.’

One of their spokeperson from the council also claimed that following a routine visit, United’s environmental health officers assigned a rating of two for food hygiene. They are now working closely to ensure that they comply with the rating and make the necessary modifications.
