New Delhi: Manchester United completed a 7-0 rout of League One side Barnsley in their EFL Cup opener on Wednesday to record their biggest victory under current manager Erik Ten Hag. It was a ‘perfect’ night for United after a mixed start to the new season as the Reds showcased their attacking prowess with their forwards clicking together.
Marcus Rashford, Alejandro Garnacho and Christian Eriksen bagged a brace each while Brazilian winger Antony converted a penalty in the first half to power United to a commanding 7-0 win against a hapless Barnsley. It was United’s biggest win since their 9-0 thrashing of Southampton in February 2021 and the first instance of the club scoring more than 4 goals in a game under Ten Hag.
Rashford’s goal-scoring run continued against Barnsley after he ended his long-standing drought against Southampton in the Premier League last week. The England star opened the scoring for United in the 16th minute against Barnsley on Wednesday after a composed finish on an excellent cross from Garnacho.
Garnacho was also involved in Rashford’s second goal in the match which came in the 58th minute. The Argentinian himself enjoyed a brilliant outing as he scored twice. Garnacho bagged his first goal in the extra time in the first half before returning to score again in the 49th minute in the second half to complete his brace.
Rashford, who had already put himself on the scoresheet in the 16th minute, passed on a penalty to Antony in the 35th minute and the Brazilian gladly converted it to bag his first goal of the season for the Reds. It was midfielder Christian Eriksen, who added the finishing touches and completed United’s 7-0 rout with two goals inside 4 minutes.
Eriksen rolled back time as he bagged his first goal in the game in the 81st minute before scoring again in the 85th minute to help United wrap up a dominant victory and cruise to the last 16 of the EFL Cup. It was a clinical display from United as they managed to keep another clean sheet in the game which will boost their confidence ahead of their Europa League clash against Twente on Thursday.
