Manu Bhaker on verge of history, can become 1st Indian to achieve elusive feat at Paris Olympics

New Delhi: Manu Bhaker is on the verge of creating history at the Paris Olympics 2024. The 22-year-old shooter, who is India’s first medallist at the Paris Games, can become the first Indian to win two medals in a single edition of the Olympics. Bhaker opened India’s tally at the Games on Sunday with a bronze medal in the women’s 10m air rifle event.

Bhaker became the first Indian female shooter to win a medal at the Olympics, bringing an end to India’s 12-year-old medal drought at the quadrennial extravaganza. India last won a shooting medal at the Olympics in 2012 when Gagang Narang won a bronze medal in the men’s 10 air rifle event in London. Bhaker now has a chance to achieve an extraordinary feat at the Paris Games.

Bhaker will have a shot at a second medal at the Paris Olympics when she competes in the bronze medal match of the mixed team 10m air pistol event along with Sarabjot Singh. The Indian pair qualified for the bronze medal match after finishing third in the mixed team 10m air pistol event on Monday. They finished with a total of 580 points to secure a third spot in the qualifying round.

Manu Bhaker can become 1st Indian to achieve remarkable feat

With a chance to win another bronze medal in the missed team 10m air pistol event, Bhaker can become the first Indian athlete to win two medals in the same edition of the Olympics. No Indian athlete has ever managed to win multiple medals in a single edition of the showpiece event. In fact, only two Indians have won more than one individual medal in Olympics history.

Sushil Kumar and PV Sindhu are the only Indian athletes with two individual medals at the Olympics. Sushil won a silver medal in wrestling at the Beijing Olympics in 2008 and a bronze medal at the London Olympics in 2012. Sindhu won a silver medal in women’s singles badminton at the 2016 Rio Olympics and a bronze medal at the Tokyo Olympics 2020.

Bhaker has a chance to become the first to win two medals in the same edition which has never happened in India’s Olympic history. Bhaker and Sarabjit will be up against South Korea’s Oh Ye Jin and Lee Wonho in the bronze medal match in the mixed team 10m air pistol final on Tuesday, July 30.

Even if Bhaker missed out on the bronze medal in the mixed team 10m air pistol final on Tuesday, she will have another shot at winning a medal when she competes in the women’s 25m air pistol final at the Paris Games. Though, she won’t start as a favourite, Bhaker will be hoping to finish on the podium in the 25m air pistol event.
