New Delhi: Indian shooter Manu Bhaker will aim at scripting history during the finals of the women’s 10m air pistol event at the Paris Olympics 2024 on Sunday. She entered the history books on Saturday (Day 1) by becoming the first Indian woman to qualify for the final of the event. She finished third in the qualifying round with a score of 580-27x, scoring most central inner shots. The 22-year-old will be eyeing gold in the final.
After a dull show from the mixed team and individual events of Indian shooters at the start of the opening day, hopes were high that Bhaker would turn the tide. Bhaker looked promising from the very start of her event as she jumped to the fourth spot in the qualifying round after scoring two 97s in the first and the second series, respectively. She scored a brilliant 98 in the third series and moved to the second spot but dropped to the third spot after scoring 96 in the fourth series. Her compatriot Rhythm Sangwan couldn’t make it in the final as she finished 15th in the qualification round.
She wouldn’t want to remember the horrors of the Tokyo Olympics 2020 where she failed to qualify for the final after a gun malfunction and will be coming fresh into the final battle to aim at gold, also a first Olympic medal. Bhaker will compete against some of the world’s finest shooters in her category in the final and will have a chance to make history for India by becoming the first female to win a gold medal in shooting at the Olympics.
Her notable competitors will be Hungary’s Veronika Major, who topped the qualification round with a score of 582-22x, and the likes of South Korea’s OH Ye Jin and Jiang Ranxin of China, who also holds the qualification record in women’s 10m air pistol final in both the Olympics and the World Championships.
