Mumbai: Hindus across the world will soon observe the sacred festival of Masik Kalashtami, a monthly ritual dedicated to Lord Kal Bhairav, a fierce form of Lord Shiva. Celebrated on the Ashtami tithi (eighth day) of the Krishna Paksha (waning moon phase) every month, Kalashtami is also known as Bhairavashtami in many regions. Devotees believe that special prayers and rituals performed on this day bring the blessings of Lord Shiva and his fearsome manifestation, Kal Bhairav, helping them overcome life’s challenges and fulfil their desires.

When will Kalashtami be observed in September 2024?

As per the Vedic Panchang, the Ashtami tithi of Ashwin month’s Krishna Paksha will commence at 12:38 PM on September 24 and will end at 12:10 PM on September 25. Therefore, the Kalashtami fast and rituals will be observed on September 25, 2024.

Kalashtami Vrat Puja Method

The rituals of Kalashtami begin with an early morning routine. Devotees wake up during Brahma Muhurta (pre-dawn hours) to cleanse their homes thoroughly. After completing their daily routines and taking a purifying bath, they don fresh clothes to begin their spiritual practices.

The temple or prayer area in the house is cleaned and prepared for the puja. Devotees light lamps and incense sticks, and offer prayers to Lord Bhairav, the fierce form of Shiva. The entire Shiva family is worshipped on this day. The puja concludes with an aarti, followed by an offering of prasad to the deity. Devotees seek forgiveness for any unintentional mistakes made during the worship. Afterward, they offer water to the Sun God and commence their fast.

Significance of Kalashtami

Kalashtami holds a significant place in Hindu tradition, as it is dedicated to the worship of Lord Kal Bhairav, known for protecting devotees from evil forces. It is believed that by following the prescribed rituals and offering prayers to Lord Bhairav, one can attain peace, prosperity, and protection from negative influences.

In addition to personal protection, the festival is thought to help devotees fulfill their deepest desires. According to belief, worshiping Lord Kal Bhairav on Kalashtami day purges one’s sins and aids in attaining moksha (liberation from the cycle of life and death).
