New Delhi: Formula One has announced that the Miami Grand Prix will stay in the calendar through 2041, with 10-year extension to the previous agreement with the promomoter South Florida Motorsports. The new deal is the longest contracted event on the F1 calendar ever. 

The Miami GP came to Formula One in 2022, with a contract extending until 2031 and has since been one of the most exciting events of the calendar. It has gotten great attention in the United States and across the globe as well. The race has had a significant impact on the local economy as well, generating more than US $1 billion in economic impact across its first three years, and race organisers have even established internship programmes as well as worked with the local charities. 

Miami is one of the three races in the US, with Austin’s Circuit of the Americas has hosted the US GP since 2012 while Las Vegan GP was added in calendar in 2023. With an immense success of the Netflix documentary “Drive to Survive” the F1 has received a huge attraction in the country.

How the Miami GP extension looks for Formula One

F1 boss Stefano Domenicali, in a press conference, has said that Miami was an “important pillar” for growing the sport in the country. Domenicali went on to say that the extension would ensure that the fanbase is well connected with the motorsport, being impressed by the growth the event has shown in the last three years.

Miami’s new deal is the longest of any race in F1 at the moment, and highlights the enthusiasm for the sport in the United States. The current contracts for Silverstone and Monza expire in 2034, and until now, Melbourne’s deal was the longest running till 2037.

Miami becoming the next most attractive destination for Formula One was always on cards. It has everythiong that makes this a glamourous sport. In parallels, Miami can be compared to the Monaco race, that attracts a huge number of celebrities, party svenes and big local personalities. Further it has the quality of generating good revenue, viewership and drivers enjoy the circuit, even though the circuit might not be the most exciting one.

The 2024 race in the circuit saw a record attendance of nearly 275,000 fans across the weekend, with Lando Norris taking his first FP win. The inaugural race of 2022 was won by Max Verstappen, and was again won by the Dutch driver in 2023. The GP also attracted the most US television viewership, with 3.1 million viewers watching the action. It is built around the iconic Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens, which is set to host seven FIFA World Cup games next year.
