New Delhi: Former India women captain Mithali Raj has parted ways with the Gujarat Giants franchise just ahead of the Women’s Premier League (WPL) auction. It is learnt that Mithali, who was associated with the Gujarat franchise as a mentor and advisor, decided to calls it quits after taking up a new role with the Andhra Cricket Association.
According to a report in Cricbuzz, Mithali and Gujarat franchise didn’t have too much to work on as they parted ways mutually. The ace cricketer was associated with the WPL franchise for a period of three years but the partnership has mutually ended only after two seasons, in which Gujarat finished at the bottom. At the Andhra Cricket Association, Mithali would be responsible for scouting and grooming young talent across the state in the capacity of a mentor. The report further mentions that she has signed a three-year contract with the state association.
Double blow for Giants
Apart from Mithali, Gujarat Giants bowling coach Nooshin Al Khadeer has also opted to not renew the contract with the franchise. She was on a two-year contract and is currently serving as the coach of the India Under-19 Women’s team. Meanwhile, Giants are expected to make an announcement for their replacements on Thursday, says the report.
Meanwhile, a total of 120 players will feature in the WPL 2025 mini-auction, which is scheduled to be held on December 15 in Bengaluru. Out of the total lot, 91 are Indians and 29 players are overseas, including three from associate teams. A maximum of 19 slots are to be filled across the five franchises and five of those can be taken by overseas players, as per the latest WPL rule.
