New Delhi: Manchester City and Real Madrid will meet once more in the Champions League, a rivalry that has grown into one of the modern era’s defining European battles. This will mark their fourth meeting in the last four seasons but with one crucial difference this time around.
The two European giants are battling to stay in the tournament this season rather than a semi-final or a late-stage showdown. Both clubs have been synonymous with success in recent years, and have found themselves in an unthinkable position struggling to even reach the last 16. But how did it come to this for two of Europe’s most dominant forces let’s find out.
Manchester City’s uncertain season

Pep Guardiola’s Man City barely scraped into the play-offs with a nerve-wracking win over Club Brugge in their final group game. Their struggles this season have been a mix of poor decisions, injuries, and a general lack of rhythm.
Pep Guardiola had the chance to reinforce his squad after another Premier League-winning campaign but opted against it due to uncertainty over his own future. He was seriously tempted by the idea of managing England and for a brief period, he was leaning toward accepting the job. But in the end, loyalty to City and the belief in his squad kept him in Manchester.
The defending champions dominantly started the season leading the Premier League and maintaining an unbeaten run across Europe’s top leagues. However, injuries and squad fatigue soon derailed them. Rodri’s long-term knee injury coupled with fitness issues for key defenders like Manuel Akanji and John Stones left the team in a vulnerable position.
Phil Foden has also struggled to hit his best form, Kevin De Bruyne has been inconsistent, and Jack Grealish is yet to prove himself as a difference-maker. City’s usual fluency has been missing and their lack of sharpness has been evident in training sessions.

In the middle of the December Guardiola silenced any doubts about his future by signing a one-year contract extension, keeping him at City for a decade. But staying on has come with its own challenges.
The squad is in need of fresh energy, and Guardiola knows it. Some senior players remain loyal to him, yet others are considering their futures elsewhere. The emotional and physical toll on the manager is also visible on the pitch as he has been picking up illness after illness, a sign of the relentless pressure he places on himself.
Just when City seemed to be getting back on track, a crushing defeat to Paris Saint-Germain threw them into deeper trouble. They briefly recovered with wins over Chelsea and Club Brugge but were sooner humiliated 5-1 by Arsenal. This inconsistency is likely to persist for the remainder of the season.
Guardiola’s immediate goal is to secure a top-four finish in the league which given their struggles he been described as an achievement worth celebrating like a title. With Ruben Dias, Josko Gvardiol, and Nathan Ake all returning could improve City’s defensive solidity but their Champions League hopes are hanging by a thread.
Real Madrid’s defensive nightmares

Real Madrid’s road to this unexpected play-off tie has not been as rocky as City’s but they had their share of drama. Three group-stage defeats left them in an unfamiliar situation of playing an elite opponent much earlier than expected.
Despite leading La Liga, Madrid have struggled against top teams this season. Their defence has been in shambles due to major injuries to Dani Carvajal, Eder Militao, and David Alaba with Antonio Rudiger also missing significant game time.
But defence isn’t their only concern. The midfield has also been less effective without Toni Kroos whose absence has left a void in controlling games. Instead of replacing him, Madrid focused their spending on Kylian Mbappe and other young talents while also investing heavily in the renovation of the Santiago Bernabeu. Financially, the club have taken a hit especially with local authorities shutting down planned concerts at the stadium which were meant to generate significant revenue.

One major question surrounding Madrid this season has been commitment. They have been winning games with sheer quality rather than discipline and effort. Vinicius Jr has been under scrutiny for inconsistent performances. After a disappointing Copa del Rey display, Luka Modric and Federico Valverde reportedly had strong words with him about his attitude. However, his performance against Atletico Madrid suggested he is starting to take responsibility.
Meanwhile, Mbappe has established himself as the main man in the squad. Jude Bellingham has also stepped up forming a leadership core with Modric and Valverde. But Madrid still remains exposed and are relying on individual brilliance rather than cohesive play.
Despite their flaws, ruling out Madrid would be foolish. They may lack defensive stability and tactical discipline but they still possess enough match-winners to navigate even the toughest of situations. Los Blancos are currently leading the La Liga standings and Carlo Ancelotti knows better how to handle tough situations than anyone else.
A battle for survival
Neither Manchester City nor Real Madrid are used to being in such a precarious position, yet here they are fighting just to stay in Europe’s elite competition.
For Man City, this match represents a chance to rescue their season and prove they still belong among Europe’s best. For Madrid, it is a test of resilience showing whether their attacking firepower can overcome their defensive frailties. Yet, amidst all the excitement, one thing is certain that when these two meet, drama is guaranteed.
