New Delhi: Liverpool striker Mohamed Salah was named Player of the Season on Saturday, capping off a stellar individual campaign that played a crucial role in helping the Reds secure their second Premier League title.

The Egyptian King scored 28 goals and provided 18 assists this season, guiding Arne Slot’s side to the title with four games to spare. This marks the second time Salah has won the award, having first claimed it in the 2017–18 season. The accolade is determined through a combination of public votes and a panel of football experts. With this achievement, Salah becomes only the fifth player to win the award twice, joining the elite company of Thierry Henry, Cristiano Ronaldo, Nemanja Vidić, and Kevin De Bruyne.

The 32-year-old edged out competition from teammates Ryan Gravenberch and Virgil van Dijk, as well as Nottingham Forest’s Morgan Gibbs-White and Chris Wood, Newcastle United’s Alexander Isak, Brentford’s Bryan Mbeumo, and Arsenal’s Declan Rice to claim the crown. Notably, this is the first time since the 2018-19 season that a Manchester City player has not won the award.

Salah has already etched his name in the record books by becoming the highest-scoring overseas player in Premier League history, surpassing Sergio Aguero’s tally of 184 goals. In addition, he has also extended his contract with Liverpool until 2027.

He is also on the verge of securing another Golden Boot for the most goals in a Premier League season, currently sitting five goals ahead of Newcastle United striker Alexander Isak heading into the final matchday. Salah is close to breaking the record of 47 goal involvements, held by Alan Shearer and Andrew Cole during the old 42-game season. The Egyptian already has 46 goal contributions in this 38-game campaign and is poised to surpass that figure as Liverpool host Crystal Palace at Anfield in their final game.

What’s next for Salah?

The Egyptian King will finally get his hands on the Premier League trophy on Sunday after Liverpool’s clash with Crystal Palace. There’s no doubt Anfield will be filled with a celebratory atmosphere, while the visitors will be looking to bounce back after last weekend’s FA Cup final triumph over Manchester United.
