Mohammed Shami’s friend reveals darkest phase of Indian pacer, says he wanted to commit suicide

New Delhi: Star pacer Mohammed Shami is undoubtedly one of the most celebrated pacers in the Indian cricket history. Shami, like any other member of the brigade, has enjoyed his share of highs and lows both on the field and off it too.

While the paceman proved out to be one of the key members of the Indian set up during the ODI World Cup, the Indian cricket team missed his services since then due to injury. While his accolades in the Indian cricket have been the benchmark of his strength, personal and professional controversies have marred his career.

Shami’s darkest phase

From his encounters with numerous injuries to his personal turmoil with ex-wife and the most lethal of it when he was slapped with match-fixing allegations, Shami has seen it all. The fast bowler witnessed the darkest phase of his life when his ex-wife, Hasin Jahan, lodged a police complaint against him, alleging him of domestic violence and match-fixing. Although, he was cleared of all these charges, yet these accusations left him in a disastrous position.

That phase was filled with so much darkness that the cricketer had even contemplated suicide at one point of time. While suicide was considered as a rumour which spread widely during his tough time, his friend Umesh Kumar on a recent YouTube podcast revealed that the cricketer actually contemplated to jump from the 19th floor of the building and end his life.

“Shami was fighting with everything during that phase. He lived with me in my house. But when the fixing allegations with Pakistan broke, and led to a probe that night, he was shattered. He said that I can tolerate everything but not allegations of betraying my country,” Umesh said on Shubhankar Mishra’s podcast ‘Unplugged’.

“It also came in the news that he wanted to do something drastic that night end his life. It was around 4 AM in the morning when I got up to drink water. I was on my way to the kitchen when I saw that he was standing on the balcony. It was the 19th floor we were living in. I understood what happened. That night of Shami’s career, I feel, was the longest. Later, one day, when we were talking, he got a message on his phone saying he got a clean chit from the committee that was investigating the matter. He was probably happier that day than he would have been if he had won a World Cup,” he added.

Meanwhile, Shami is currently recovering from an ankle injury he suffered during the ODI World Cup last year. He is expected to make a comeback in the home Test series against Bangladesh or New Zealand later this year.
