‘Morning Everybody’: Rohit Sharma emulates Lionel Messi, wakes up beside T20 World Cup 2024 trophy

New Delhi: Indian skipper Rohit Sharma woke up with the T20 World Cup 2024 trophy, the next morning after the Men in Blue defeated South Africa by 7 runs in the final at the Kensington Oval in Barbados on June 29, Saturday.

Rohit Sharma announced his retirement in the post-match press conference after the victory. He joined Virat Kohli in retiring from the T20I format. Rohit said that it was his last game and he enjoyed playing in the T20I format. He also said that there is no better time to say goodbye to this format and he loved every moment of it.

“That was my last game as well. Honestly, I have enjoyed it since the time I started playing this format. There is no better time to say goodbye to this format. I have loved every moment of it. I started my India career playing this format. This is what I wanted to do. win the Cup and say goodbye” Rohit said in the post-match press conference.

Rohit also confirmed that he will ‘very much’ continue to play ODIs and Test cricket for India. Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma finished their T20I career on a high after winning the first World Cup together. Indian all-rounder Ravindra also joined the two legendary players and announced his retirement from the shorter format.

The Men in Blue ended India’s 11-year ICC trophy drought after clinching the second T20 World Cup title. India posted 176 runs on the scoreboard in the 20 overs after opting to bat first. Virat Kohli scored 76 runs off 59 balls, his knock was laced with six boundaries and two maximums. Axar Patel and Shivam Dube also made crucial contributions with the bat.

Chasing the target, South Africa lost the wicket of Reeza Hendricks in the second over. Quinton de Kock stitched a 58-run partnership with Tristan Stubbs and Klaasen also stitched 45 run partnership with David Miller. The Proteas men were close to lifting their maiden T20 World Cup title but Bumrah, Hardik and Arshdeep Singh pulled things back in India’s favour and the Men in Blue won the match by 7 runs.

Skipper Rohit Sharma ended the tournament as India’s highest run scorer. Rohit scored 281 runs in 8 matches at an average of 36.71. The Indian captain started the tournament well and scored his first fifty against Ireland. He also scored match-winning half-centuries against Australia and England. Arshdeep Singh was the leading wicket-taker for the Men in Blue. He picked up 17 wickets in 8 matches while Jasprit Bumrah also took 15 wickets in 8 matches. Bumrah was also awarded with ‘Player of the Tournament’ award for his brilliant bowling.
